Lessons from the Field How Preparing for a Soccer Match is Like Prepping for a Job Interview

Lessons from the Field How Preparing for a Soccer Match is Like Prepping for a Job InterviewIve played soccer my whole life. I was on the varsity squad in college and traveled abroad with the kollektiv. If a soccer ball is nearby, youll find me kicking it. Not only is soccer a great way to unwind, its also proven quite useful in my current career as a recruiter. Lessons that I learned on the field how to read your opponent, how to prepare for a big match are lessons that help me better prepare candidates for tough job interviews. Even if youve never played a match before, these lessons from soccer can leise take your interviewing game to the next level.Review past performance.Top athletes prepare for the next match by reviewing game footage, analyzing previous mistakes and talking with other players. Job candidates should do the same. Hiring managers expect a candidate to come into the interview already familiar with the companys mission statement, executive leadership team and ind ustry challenges. But this prep work reviewing a company website and LinkedIn profiles is just the first step.Take your preparation to the next level by reviewing your past performance. First, think about your previous work experience. When have you performed tasks similar to the job description requirements? Organize a brief anecdote about this experience using the STAR method situation, task, action, result. Second, consider how youve performed in previous interviews. Are there questions that tripped you up or times you stumbled over answers? Thinking through what went wrong is key to avoiding a repeat misstep.Start every match with confidence.Starting every soccer match with a confident, positive attitude can be tough. Ive stepped onto the field before thinking, I dont feel great today were leid gonna win. And you know what? If I didnt shake that negative attitude, I struggled. Ive seen the same attitude challenges sink otherwise strong candidates. Its normal to feel a little a nxious or nervous before a big interview. But if you walk into the room thinking, Im not qualified for this position, youre going to struggle, too.I always tell my candidates to keep these truths in mind Ive connected them with this company because I believe they are an exceptional match for this position. The company has agreed to interview them because they are impressed with their background. The candidate needs to believe this is true, too. If you dont think you have enough experience or the perfect set of skills, these concerns will show during the interview. Try visualizing yourself signing an offer letter or starting your first day at the new job. You belong here Now channel that confidence into your interview.Be ready to adapt. For most of my soccer career, I played center midfield and sweeper. Playing sweeper gives me a view of the entire field and defense. I stay back and direct people where to go. If the attacking team shifts, my job is to adjust our defense accordingly. T he ability to adapt quickly is key.In an interview, you need to adapt quickly, too. Maybe the hiring manager asks a question you never expected. Maybe a member of the executive team decides to join the interview halfway through. Or, maybe your interviewer tells you the position requirements have shifted and begins quizzing you on an entirely different role. The unexpected will happen, and when it does, take a deep breath, relax and answer with confidence.Read your audience.Part of adapting is reading your audience. In an interview, you wont be looking downfield at another team. Instead, youll be reading the body language and energy levels of the room. Observing your surroundings and adjusting accordingly is key to a successful interview experience. For example, I had a candidate fall flat when asked how he handled a negative experience with a supervisor. Rather than quickly summarizing the situation and focusing on the resolution, the candidate spent 15 minutes detailing the bad exp erience. Had the candidate paused at any point to read the room, he would have seen that the hiring manager wasnt engaging with his story, and he could have pivoted his answer. This is a great example of why you should observe your surroundings during the interview. Look for clues like the interviewer leaning forward, smiling, and asking follow-up questions.

How a Woman at Walmart Is Making Employees Access to Education a Priority

How a Woman at Walmart Is Making Employees Access to Education a Priority Jacqui Canney, Chief People Officer at Walmart, welches the first person in herbei family to go to college. Both her grandmothers immigrated to the U.S. and worked as seamstresses, and their tireless work ethic largely informed how Canney was raised with an emphasis on education. Both my parents didnt go to college, but they valued not only this work ethic but also what education could unlock, Canney explains. After graduating from college, Canney felt compelled to secure a job that would help her pay back her loans and now, in the C-Suite at Walmart, shes paying it forward. Canney recently sat down with Fairygodboss to speak about one of Walmarts latest initiatives one dear to her heart thats enabling employees to earn Associates or Bachelors degrees for just $1 a day.Tell us about Walmarts new educational offering to employees.Partnering with Guild Education, weve launched a new offering to our associates fo r a dollar a day at certain acleistungspunkted universities, through working at Walmart, you can get credit for either an Associates or Bachelors degree whatever you are aspiring to and then be able to finish off with college credit to get those degrees. We launched it in late May/early June, and weve had thousands of associates already sign up, and tens of thousands show interest, which is really exciting. And this offering extends to hourly employees, is that right?Yes, absolutely. Its offered for a wide range of associates. What was your involvement in implementing this program? Our business leaders were very passionate and excited about this program, and then we had a people team that was equally passionate. My personal experience was having to cobble together the funds to go to college myself. And the CEO of Walmart U.S. similarly didnt get a college experience until well into when he was working. So, I think part of it is a personal connection and knowing what its like to aspire to get those degrees and credentials but feeling limited by your financial resources. It was easier to implement than you may think because there wasnt a lot of convincing involved it was just figuring out the execution at the scale that were on. You cant dismiss that it costs money, but it was an investment that leaders at Walmart were willing to make for our people and their development. And going back to the personal connection for you, werent you the first person in your family to go to college?Yes. My grandmothers immigrated to the U.S. to Hoboken. They were both seamstresses. Their work ethic and what they were doing translated much into how my mom and dad were growing up. Both my parents didnt go to college, but they valued not only this work ethic but also what education could unlock. So, for me and my sister, they were making sure they were doing the best they could to ensure we were getting the educational opportunities that were around us.They also expected us, though, to be putting hard work in. They had high expectations, so getting into college was important to them. How we financed it was going to be complicated, but they put in as much as they could, and I had to work my way through and then pay back loans after. I was excited to get a job at a company that my dad was proud to tell his friends about when he would commute on the train to New York City Jacqui works at Arthur Anderson, hed say that was a lot of pride. And now, when my mom talks to her friends about me working at Walmart, its the same thing.I felt a great responsibility to get a job that was going to be able to help pay back those loans and show the pride that my parents put in was something that I felt really connected to.Now, Im very proud of this new offering at Walmart. And I think the more that we promote it and encourage it and show results, the more associates will really take us up on it. --To hear more from Canney, tune in to this recent episode ofFairygodboss Radio
